Today, a large majority of members voting in each of the three units approved the agreements negotiated with SPPS. The Executive board will certify the results at the March meeting.

The St. Paul Teacher Federation called off a planned strike for Feb.12 after coming to a tentative agreement on a contract. The Federation had to voted to strike Jan. 29, following months of failed contract negotiations.

“Striking is usually a bad thing, and nobody benefits from a strike,” said Barry Frantum, a Dakota language teacher at Harding. “Last, last, LAST option.”

Every teacher participating in a strike doesn’t get paid as long as the strike goes on. However, “striking doesn’t affect just the teachers; it affects the students education and parents who have kids too,” Mr. Frantum said.

Julia Shepherd, a Harding English teacher, also had some words to say. “I’m participating because I am really involved with the city of St Paul.”

Q-Comp is a program to evaluate teachers’ ineffectiveness. The state pays for the program.

Under the tentative agreement, the district would pay more for teachers who help students whose first language isn’t English.
