Saint Paul Public School decided to move to a later start time for high school students, beginning in September 2019. Many people support this idea; however, many are against it.

Many people will be affected by the change in their schedule, including elementary students and their parents.

Erik Brandt, English teacher and IBOP coordinator at Harding, supports the idea of the later start time. “I think it is good for students, they need more sleep,” he said

Some people argue that the students will just stay up late but to Mr. Brandt, this is irrelevant. He said, “I think the kids are going to go to bed around the same time,” he said.

Mr. Brandt also believes this will allow the kids to be more helpful at home in the morning, and make teachers feel better. “When students have more rest, we’re happier, we can focus more on the lesson and we feel better about ourselves,” he said.

Some believe students are doing poorly due to lack of sleep, but according to Mr. Brandt, this is not true. “Still, I do think having more sleep will help them do better and more focus,” he said.

Kathy Jackson, Harding’s athletic director, is against the idea of the later start time. She is not so happy about this change because she herself  is a coach and said this will affect many coaches and many athletes. “The coaches have not really been talking about this change, but it does mean that many games time will have to be pushed back a little bit and many will not,” she said.

The change will affect not only Saint Paul Public School coa
